Anne's journey into the world of accountancy started back in 1984. Although armed with a degree in Information Processing, she quickly realised that programming wasn't her calling.
Fortunately for us here at Walker and Sutcliffe Chartered Accountants, this led her to explore the world of accountancy.
Tax Director – Intrigued By A Comma
It was during Anne’s university days, through a talk by a tax director, that she was introduced to the profession. His words painted a picture of an exciting career, but what triggered Anne’s interest was the statement “answers in tax could hinge on a single comma”. This concept intrigued Anne, sparking her interest in the intricate nuances of tax legislation.
Accountancy Apprenticeship
Much like apprentices today, Anne embarked on her career journey through a training contract with a local company in Huddersfield.
Anne's fascination with tax deepened as her interest and experience grew. She completed a tax secondment, relishing the experience, which ultimately led her to pursue a specialist tax qualification.
Tax – Technical Expertise
Throughout her journey, Anne encountered various levels of complexity in tax examinations, but she quickly realised that real-life applications differed from textbook scenarios.
Anne comments: “Tax isn’t just about technical expertise; it's about understanding how tax laws affect people's lives and businesses.”
